Giardia is one of the most common intestinal parasites in dogs and cats.
Sometimes it causes acute diarrhea, but often an infection remains dormant for a long time, resulting in chronic bowel, skin and behavioral complaints.

What happens in the intestines with Giardia?
Giardia lives in the small intestine and comes in two forms:
- an active form that attaches to the villi
- an encapsulated cyst that can survive outside the body for months
When attached to the intestinal wall:
- the absorption of fats, sugars and starch is disrupted
- deficiencies of vitamins and minerals
- the intestinal mucosa becomes irritated
In addition, Giardia forms a pathogenic biofilm:
a protective mucus layer in which parasites, bacteria and yeasts can hide.
This biofilm makes Giardia less sensitive to medication and contributes to chronic low-grade inflammation.

A healthy gut contains billions of beneficial bacteria that:
