Description

Your animal has chronic coughing, shortness of breath, recurring respiratory infections or has been diagnosed with bronchitis or asthma. What your vet told you, and what else is going on

Your vet may have prescribed antibiotics, a bronchodilator, or corticosteroids for asthma. That is justified with the right indication. But chronic respiratory disease is rarely just a local problem in the lungs. They result from impaired mucosal immune function, chronic inflammation, and a microbiome-lung axis that is rarely recognized as such.

What your vet may not have explained

The intestine and the lung are connected via the microbiome-lung axis. Gut dysbiosis increases the systemic LPS burden that enhances airway inflammation via TLR4.
Mucosal IgA is the first line of defense in the respiratory tract. With a weakened microbiome, IgA production is reduced, which increases the risk of infection.
NAC thins mucus by breaking disulfide bridges in mucus proteins. This improves mucociliary clearance independent of anti-inflammatory intervention.
Leukotria are the primary mediators of bronchoconstriction in asthma in cats. Boswellia inhibits 5-lipoxygenase directly without the side effects of corticosteroids.
Chronic coughing damages the airway epithelium. Vitamin C as a cofactor for collagen synthesis in the airway wall supports the recovery of this epithelium.
Recurrent infections indicate impaired mucosal immune function, not just bad luck. System support addresses the susceptibility, not just the infection.

Nutrition for respiratory diseases

Our nutritional advice for respiratory problems

No ultra-processed dry food. Ultra-processed foods amplify dysbiosis and increase LPS load that maintains airway inflammation via the microbiome-lung axis. In cat asthma, avoiding food allergens via fresh varied protein sources is mechanistically relevant.
Omega-3-rich protein sources. Fish, particularly fatty fish such as salmon and mackerel, provide EPA and DHA that inhibit leukotriene B4 production. This is directly relevant in asthma and chronic bronchitis where leukotriene mediators drive the inflammation.
Antioxidant-rich vegetables. Broccoli, spinach, and kale contain sulforaphane that activates Nrf2 and increases the antioxidant capacity of airway epithelium. Ginger and turmeric have a direct anti-inflammatory effect on respiratory tissue.
Adequate hydration. Moist food supports mucociliary clearance. Cats on dry food are structurally underhydrated, which dries out mucous membranes and worsens mucus clearance.

Three mechanisms that drive respiratory disease

1. Mucosal immune function

Secretory IgA is the primary immunological barrier in the respiratory tract. Microbiome-dependent IgA production is reduced in dysbiosis, causing recurrent infections.

2. Leukotria and bronchoconstriction

5-lipoxygenase metabolizes arachidonic acid to leukotriene B4 and D4 which cause bronchoconstriction, mucus hyperproduction, and mast cell activation. The core of asthma in cats.

3. Microbiome lung axis

Gut dysbiosis increases systemic LPS burden. LPS activates TLR4 on airway epithelium and alveolar macrophages, which induces NF-kB activation and pro-inflammatory cytokine production that maintains chronic airway inflammation.

Our advice: phased support in addition to the care of your veterinarian

The phasing is mechanistically determined: first stabilize the intestine and systemic LPS load, then directly support airway inflammation and mucosal immune function, then build the recovery capacity of the airway epithelium.

Reducing LPS Load on Airway Epithelium via Intestinal Repair

The gut-lung connection runs through the systemic circulation. LPS from a disturbed intestinal barrier reaches the lung capillaries via the blood and activates alveolar macrophages via TLR4. This maintains a chronic pro-inflammatory state in the respiratory tract that persists even after elimination of the initial infectious agent. Prebiotics restore the microbiome balance and reduce LPS-producing dysbiosis. Vitamin C supports IgA production in mucosal cells and protects the airway epithelium. Curcumin inhibits NF-kB in alveolar macrophages.
