What is lactoferrin?
Lactoferrin is a natural protein that occurs naturally in colostrum, but also in saliva, tears and mucous membranes. It belongs to the group of glycoproteins and is naturally iron-binding. In the body, it plays a crucial role in regulating iron, protecting mucous membranes and directing immune responses.
Why liposomal?
Ordinary proteins are often partly broken down in the gastrointestinal tract by stomach acid and enzymes.
In its liposomal form , lactoferrin is packaged in microscopic fat globules (phospholipids), similar to our own cell membranes.
✅ This makes lactoferrin better protected against degradation
✅ It reaches the intestines intact and is absorbed more efficiently
✅ Animals with low stomach acid, mucous membrane damage or impaired intestinal function also benefit optimally
How does lactoferrin work?
1. Strengthens the intestinal mucosal barrier
The intestinal mucous membranes are the first line of defense. Lactoferrin supports the production of mucus, strengthens the tight junctions (the connections between intestinal cells) and thus helps repair in the event of
2. Binds free iron → inhibits pathogens
Many pathogenic bacteria, yeasts and parasites require free iron to grow. Lactoferrin binds this iron and thus makes it less available, limiting the growth of Candida, Giardia and bacterial overgrowth (as in SIBO).
3. Supports infections and co-infections
Due to its antimicrobial and immunomodulatory action, lactoferrin can help the body restore balance in situations with infectious stimuli, such as Lyme or chronic intestinal inflammation. It has a supportive effect here, as a natural balance factor.
4. Reduces low-grade inflammation
Lactoferrin affects inflammatory pathways such as NF-κB and thus helps to inhibit low-grade inflammatory signals . This contributes to a balanced immune response and prevents the immune system from remaining activated too strongly or for too long.
5. Synergy with other substances
Lactoferrin works more powerfully in combination with other natural substances:
Enzymes – support digestion and mucosal relief
Prebiotics & probiotics – restore gut microbiome
Berberine & NAC – effective against pathogens such as Giardia or bacterial overgrowth
Together, these substances form a widely applicable therapeutic toolkit for gut and immune health.
