Description
Short summary
This supplement helps with: elevated liver values, liver stress due to long-term medication use (such as anti-epileptics, NSAIDs, or prednisolone), recovery after a period of liver stress, and supporting detoxification in older dogs and cats. Use in consultation with the veterinarian.
How does Liver Support work for liver stress?
The liver processes medications, waste products, and hormones. This processing creates free radicals that can damage the liver cell itself. The most important protection is glutathione, the liver cell’s own antioxidant. Liver Support supports the liver on three points: protecting the liver cell, producing glutathione, and draining bile.
SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine) and NAC (N-acetylcysteine) are both precursors to glutathione. SAMe has been studied in dogs and cats and is widely used in veterinary medicine for liver problems, where internal production is often reduced. NAC provides cysteine, the building block that is usually the limiting factor in glutathione production. Silymarin from milk thistle protects the liver cell membrane and supports its recovery. The phytosomal form, bound to phospholipids, improves absorption, which is low with regular silymarin.
Artichoke and dandelion extract stimulate the production and drainage of bile, the route through which the liver gets rid of fat-soluble waste products. Liposomal curcumin inhibits inflammation in the liver via NF-kB and activates Nrf2: the switch for the liver cell’s own antioxidant systems.
Liver Support is part of the NGD Vet Pro Line: the foundation of the liver protocol in one supplement, used under the guidance of a veterinarian.
What does this supplement do?
- Core supplement of the NGD Care liver protocol, in consultation with the veterinarian
- Supports the liver cell during increased stress
- Contributes to glutathione production via SAMe and NAC
- Supports bile production and drainage via artichoke and dandelion
- Phytosomal silymarin and liposomal curcumin for better absorption
- Supplement to regular liver care, always in consultation with the veterinarian
When do you see results?
The liver has a great capacity for recovery, but recovery takes time. From a systems biology perspective, the antioxidant status of the liver cell improves first. Liver values in the blood only follow after weeks and are the best measurement point.
SAMe and NAC replenish glutathione stores. In some animals, initial improvement in appetite and energy.
More energy, better appetite. Artichoke and dandelion support bile drainage.
Time for a check-up of liver values with the veterinarian.
For chronic liver stress or long-term medication use, a maintenance supplement with periodic blood checks.
Have liver values checked after 6 to 8 weeks. Questions about use? Contact us via our app or email, or schedule an intake with integrative veterinarian Stefan Veenstra via NatuurlijkGezondeDieren.nl.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Can Liver Support be used alongside medication?
Yes, it is often used specifically with long-term medication use such as anti-epileptics or prednisolone. Always consult the veterinarian first, also due to possible interactions with SAMe.
When should you have liver values checked?
After 6 to 8 weeks of use. Liver values in the blood are the best measurement point.
When should you not use Liver Support?
In case of bile duct obstruction or gallstones, due to the bile-stimulating effect of artichoke, dandelion, and curcumin.
When do you use Liver Support on its own and when the liver protocol?
Liver Support is always used in consultation with the veterinarian. On its own, it is suitable for temporary liver stress, such as during a course of medication. For chronically elevated liver values or a diagnosed liver condition, the full Liver Support Protocol is the foundation. This is based on restoring the gut-liver axis.
Can Liver Support be used together with a protocol?
Yes. Liver Support can be combined with any NGD Care protocol, including the Gut Recovery Protocol. Within the liver protocol, Liver Support is the core supplement.

Core supplement of a protocol
Liver Support is the core supplement of the NGD Care liver protocol. It bundles the foundation of that protocol into one capsule: liver cell protection, glutathione production, and bile drainage. The protocol is intended for veterinarians or is followed in consultation with your own veterinarian, with blood tests as the starting point and measurement point.
Works well with
Liver Support protects the liver cell and supports detoxification. The supplements below strengthen this from the gut and the antioxidant system.
Liposomal Glutathione
SAMe and NAC stimulate the body’s own production of glutathione. Liposomal glutathione replenishes the supply directly. Together, the strongest support for the liver cell.
Gut Support
Via the gut-liver axis, bacterial substances from a leaky gut enter the liver directly via the portal vein. Gut Support supports the intestinal barrier and thus relieves the liver.
Liposomal Vitamin C
Vitamin C converts used glutathione back into its active form. A recycled antioxidant system works more efficiently.
Renal Support
The liver and kidneys share the removal of waste products. In older animals and with long-term medication use, both organs are often stressed.
