Description
Shilajit is not an ordinary supplement but a phytocomplex: a biologically rich matrix of hundreds of compounds, formed by millennia-long conversion of plant material by microorganisms in high mountain rock crevices. The two most clinically relevant fractions are fulvic acid (60 to 80% of the extract) and dibenzo-alpha-pyrones (DBPs).
Fulvic acid has a low molecular weight that allows it to pass through cell walls effortlessly. It acts as an antioxidant via electron donation, as a mineral transporter for iron, zinc and magnesium, as an NF-kB inhibitor for chronic inflammation and as a stimulator of Akkermansia muciniphila for the intestinal barrier. DBPs are unique compounds found nowhere else in nature and directly support the mitochondrial electron transport chain, synergistically with CoQ10.
Clinically relevant: A randomized controlled trial showed that eight weeks of shilajit significantly increased the serum marker for collagen type I synthesis. In dogs with arthritis, a 120-day observational study showed reductions in pain and inflammation. A 2025 review confirmed its safety and anti-inflammatory effect in humans.
Shilajit is the first choice for humans in phase 2 of the NGD Care Bowel Protocol. For animals, Gut Barrier Support (fulvic and humic acids) is the preferred variant. Both work through the same fulvic acid mechanisms. Can also be used in the Old Age Protocol, Joint Protocol and as a separate supplement for chronic inflammation and fatigue.
