Description
This protocol helps with: fear of fireworks, thunderstorm fear, noise phobia and acute panic situations in dogs and cats. It supports on an emotional and physiological level, from direct calming via flower remedies and aromatherapy to structural HPA axis support for severe anxiety. Available in a small package for mild anxiety and a comprehensive package for structural stress sensitivity.
Why two levels of support?
For many animals, fear of fireworks is not an isolated behavioral problem but an expression of a chronically overactive nervous system. Animals that panic at fireworks are actually reacting to a system that is already structurally overloaded: an HPA axis that emits cortisol at the slightest stimulus, a neurotransmitter balance that has been disturbed for weeks or months, and sometimes also a disturbed gut-brain axis that amplifies the stress response from within.
Instant calming through flower remedies and aromatherapy helps in the moment. But in animals with structural stress sensitivity, this is insufficient if the nervous system is physiologically unable to calm itself. This requires an approach that starts months in advance: HPA axis repair via adaptogens and immune modulation via adaptogenic mushrooms. And in severe anxiety, the gut-brain axis is also a mechanistic point of attention that cannot be ignored.
How does the Fireworks Protocol work?
The protocol has three levels that build on each other. Each level has its own starting point. Don’t start on December 31: the nervous system recovers more slowly than New Year’s Eve approaches.
Flower essences (Firework Essence) work on the emotional and energetic level of the fear response. The mix based on Star Remedies and Australian Bush Flower Essences includes Star of Bethlehem for acute shock and trauma, Rock Rose for intense panic, and Mimulus for well-known fear such as fireworks sound. Flower essences are not a pharmacological agent but an energetic intervention that is well tolerated in integrative practice and is widely used in animals in stressful situations. Start at least two weeks before New Year’s Eve to build up the emotional effect. The Firework essential oil works through the olfactory system, the fastest neurological system for stress modulation in mammals. The blend of cedarwood, patchouli, lavender, frankincense and cypress activates the limbic system via the olfactory bulb and directly modulates the anxiety and stress response. The roller oil is applied to the animal’s collar, flight area or sleeping place. Not suitable for use directly on the fur of cats: cats lick themselves and thus absorb essential oils internally, which can be toxic with some oils. In cats, only apply to the sleeping area or basket at a distance from the animal, never on the fur. The diffuser oil also contains ylang ylang, which is harmful to cats: the diffuser oil is only suitable for use on dogs in well-ventilated areas where the dog can walk away freely.
The extensive package adds three supplements that make the nervous system physiologically more resilient to stressful stimuli. Adaptogen Complex contains ashwagandha and rhodiola modulates the HPA axis via cortisol reduction and GABA activation in the hypothalamus. Ashwagandha structurally lowers the basic reactivity of the stress system; The effect is noticeable after two to three weeks but optimal after six to eight weeks. That is exactly why starting two months in advance is necessary. Relax Support contains L-theanine, L-tryptophan and magnesium. Relax support provides direct neurotransmitter support: L-theanine modulates alpha-brainwave activity within thirty to sixty minutes, L-tryptophan delivers the direct serotonin precursor via the 5-HTP pathway, and magnesium modulates NMDA receptors and supports GABA synthesis. Relax Support is therefore the fastest working supplement in the extensive package and also effective on the evening itself. CBD oil acutely modulates the fear response via the endocannabinoid system and the 5-HT1A serotonin receptor. Together with Relax Support, CBD forms the acute layer of the protocol, while Adaptogen Complex builds the structural foundation.
In animals with severe fear of fireworks, panic or aggression in response to sound, there is a good chance that the gut-brain axis is structurally disturbed. A dysbiotic microbiome produces fewer serotonin precursors and more pro-inflammatory metabolites that increase stress reactivity. This cannot be solved with any fear protocol without addressing the gut. The NGD Care Bowel Protocol lasts 16 weeks and requires a four-month head start. Combined with behavioral therapy (desensitization and counter-conditioning with a recognized behavioral therapist), this gives the best results for structural anxiety problems.
When to start?
Start Bowel Protocol and behavioral therapy for severe anxiety. Four months before the turn of the year is the minimum lead time.
Start Adaptogen Complex, Relax support and CBD oil. Two months required for structural HPA axis modulation via ashwagandha.
Start flower remedies and aromatherapy. Giving daily to build up the emotional effect.
Extra dose of CBD on the evening itself. Aromatherapy spray on the sleeping place. Everything is ready for a quieter New Year’s Eve.
Does your animal still react violently to fireworks after this protocol? Schedule an intake with Stefan Veenstra via NatuurlijkGezondeDieren.nl. Severe anxiety always requires behavioral therapy guidance in addition to supplements.
Why the NGD Care Fireworks Protocol?
| Characteristic | NGD Care Fireworks Protocol | Standard approach |
|---|---|---|
| Approach | ✅ Three levels: emotional, physiological and gut-brain axis | Sedation or loose sedative products at the moment |
| Starting time | ✅ Months in advance for structural effect | Often only on the day itself, too late for HPA axis repair |
| Sedation | ✅ No sedation, animal stays alert and itself | Pharmaceutical sedatives: reduction of consciousness without anxiety reduction |
| Gut-brain axis | ✅ Included in severe anxiety as a structural basis | ❌ Rarely taken |
| Developed by veterinarian | ✅ Stefan Veenstra DVM | Rarely |
| Personal guidance | ✅ Intake possible via Naturally Healthy Animals | ❌ Not available |
Is this protocol suitable for my animal?
In case of severe anxiety or aggression, always call in a certified behavioural therapist. Supplements support the nervous system but do not replace behavioural therapy. For cats: only use the Roller Oil at a distance (sleeping place, basket), never directly on the coat. The Diffuser oil with ylang ylang is not suitable for cats.
