Description
The NGD Care Fireworks Support Program helps dogs and cats with fear of fireworks, thunderstorms, noise phobia and acute panic situations. It supports on an emotional and physiological level, from direct calming via flower remedies and aromatherapy to structural HPA-axis support for severe anxiety. Available in a small package for mild anxiety and a comprehensive package for structural stress sensitivity.
Why two levels of support?
For many animals, fear of fireworks is not an isolated behavioral problem but an expression of a chronically overactive nervous system. Animals that panic at fireworks are actually reacting to a system that is already structurally overloaded: an HPA axis that emits cortisol at the slightest stimulus, a neurotransmitter balance that has been disturbed for weeks or months, and sometimes also a disturbed gut-brain axis that amplifies the stress response from within.
Instant calming through flower remedies and aromatherapy helps in the moment. But in animals with structural stress sensitivity, this is insufficient if the nervous system is physiologically unable to calm itself. This requires an approach that starts months in advance: gut repair and HPA axis repair via adaptogens and immune modulation via adaptogenic mushrooms. In severe anxiety, the gut-brain axis is a mechanistic point of interest that cannot be ignored.
How does the Fireworks Support Program work?
In case of severe anxiety or structural stress sensitivity, we recommend starting the Bowel Recovery Process, four months before the turn of the year. This is followed by two levels that build on each other, each with its own starting point. Don’t start on December 31: the nervous system recovers more slowly than New Year’s Eve approaches.
In animals with severe fear of fireworks, panic or aggression in response to sound, there is a good chance that the gut-brain axis is structurally disturbed. A dysbiotic microbiome produces fewer serotonin precursors and more pro-inflammatory metabolites that increase stress reactivity. This cannot be solved with any fear protocol without addressing the gut. The Bowel Recovery Program takes 16 weeks and requires a four-month head start. Combined with behavioral therapy (desensitization and counter-conditioning with a recognized behavioral therapist), this gives the best results for structural anxiety problems.
Flower essences (Firework Essence) work on the emotional and energetic level of the fear response. The mix based on Star Remedies and Australian Bush Flower Essences includes Star of Bethlehem for acute shock and trauma, Rock Rose for intense panic, and Mimulus for well-known fear such as fireworks sound. Flower essences are not a pharmacological agent but an energetic intervention that is well tolerated in integrative practice and is widely used in animals in stressful situations. Start at least two weeks before New Year’s Eve to build up the emotional effect. The Firework essential oil works through the olfactory system, which is the fastest neurological system for stress modulation in mammals. The blend of cedarwood, patchouli, lavender, frankincense and cypress activates the limbic system via the olfactory bulb and directly modulates the anxiety and stress response. The roller oil is applied to the animal’s collar, flight area or sleeping place. Not suitable for use directly on the fur of cats: cats lick themselves and thus absorb essential oils internally, which can be toxic with some oils. In cats, only apply to the sleeping area or basket at a distance from the animal, never on the fur. The diffuser oil also contains ylang ylang, which is harmful to cats: the diffuser oil is only suitable for use on dogs in well-ventilated areas where the dog can walk away freely.
The extensive package adds supplements that make the nervous system physiologically more resilient to stressful stimuli. Adaptogen Complex contains ashwagandha and rhodiola and modulates the HPA axis via cortisol reduction and GABA activation in the hypothalamus. Ashwagandha structurally lowers the basic reactivity of the stress system; The effect is noticeable after two to three weeks but optimal after six to eight weeks. That is exactly why starting two months in advance is necessary. Myco Adaptogen Complex complements this with Reishi for calming via histamine inhibition and Lion’s Mane for NGF stimulation, which supports longer-term nerve repair. Contain L-theanine, L-tryptophan, and magnesium, Relax Support delivers direct neurotransmitter support: L-theanine modulates alpha brainwave activity within thirty to sixty minutes, L-tryptophan delivers the direct serotonin precursor via the 5-HTP pathway, and magnesium modulates NMDA receptors and supports GABA synthesis. Relax Support is therefore the fastest working supplement in the extensive package and also effective on the evening itself. CBD oil acutely modulates the fear response via the endocannabinoid system and the 5-HT1A serotonin receptor. Together with Relax Support, CBD forms the acute layer of the pathway, while Adaptogen Complex and Myco Adaptogen Complex build the structural foundation.
When to start?
Start the Bowel Recovery Trajectory and behavioral therapy for severe anxiety. Four months before the turn of the year is the minimum lead time.
Start Adaptogen Complex, Myco Adaptogen Complex, Relax Support and CBD oil. Two months required for structural HPA axis modulation via ashwagandha.
Start flower remedies and aromatherapy. Giving daily to build up the emotional effect.
Extra dose of CBD on the evening itself. Aromatherapy spray on the sleeping place. Everything is ready for a quieter New Year’s Eve.
Does your animal still react violently to fireworks after this process? Schedule an intake with Stefan Veenstra via NatuurlijkGezondeDieren.nl. Severe anxiety always requires behavioral therapy guidance in addition to supplements.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
When should I start preparing for fireworks?
In case of severe anxiety, you start the Bowel Recovery Process and possibly behavioral therapy four months in advance (September). The extended package starts two months before the turn of the year (November), because Adaptogen Complex needs six to eight weeks for optimal effect. The small package with flower essences and aromatherapy starts at the beginning of December.
Is the essential oil safe for cats?
The roller oil can only be used in cats at a distance from the animal, such as the sleeping place or basket, never directly on the fur: cats lick themselves and absorb essential oils internally. The diffuser oil contains ylang ylang and is not suitable for cats; This is only intended for dogs in a well-ventilated area where the dog can run away freely.
Can I combine this process with sedative medication from the vet?
Yes, in many cases this process can be used as a supplement to regular medication. Always discuss the combination with the prescribing veterinarian, especially when using sedatives on the evening itself.
My dog also has fear of thunderstorms or loud noises outside New Year’s Eve. Is this route also suitable?
Yes. The underlying mechanism, an overactive HPA axis and noise phobia, is the same regardless of the specific trigger. The route can be used just as well for thunderstorm fear or other noise phobias as for fireworks anxiety.
Why the NGD Care Fireworks Support Program?

| Sedation | ✅ No sedation, animal stays alert and itself | Pharmaceutical sedatives: reduction of consciousness without anxiety reduction |
| Gut-brain axis | ✅ Starting point for severe anxiety, not a separate addition | ❌ Rarely taken |
| Developed by veterinarian | ✅ Stefan Veenstra DVM | Rarely |
| Personal guidance | ✅ Intake possible via Naturally Healthy Animals | ❌ Not available |
Is this program suitable for my animal?
In case of severe anxiety or aggression, always call in a certified behavioural therapist. Supplements support the nervous system but do not replace behavioural therapy. For cats: only use the roller oil at a distance (sleeping place, basket), never directly on the coat. The diffuser oil with ylang ylang is not suitable for cats.
