How Does Liposomal Curcumin Work?
Curcumin from turmeric is one of the most powerful natural anti-inflammatories available. It inhibits a central switch in the body called NF-kB , which controls the production of pro-inflammatory substances. By inhibiting NF-kB, curcumin simultaneously reduces the production of dozens of inflammatory substances, which explains its broad effect on so many different complaints.
The big problem with regular curcumin supplements is that less than 1% reaches the bloodstream. It is broken down in the stomach before it can work. The liposomal form of NGD Care solves this: phospholipids protect the curcuminoids and allow for absorption via a different route, which increases bioavailability by up to 60 times.
Liposomal curcumin also crosses the blood-brain barrier, which allows action in the nervous system. This is relevant for neuroinflammation and cognitive decline in senior animals.

When do you see results?
Curcumin acts on NF-kB, the central switch of chronic inflammation. From a systems biology point of view, this is an upstream intervention: it inhibits the source of inflammation, not the symptom. This gives a more durable but gradual effect than direct painkillers.

Can liposomal curcumin really cross the blood-brain barrier?
Yes, the liposomal form of curcumin can cross the blood-brain barrier, something that regular curcumin supplements can hardly do. This allows support for neuroinflammation and cognitive decline in senior animals.
Is liposomal curcumin safe to combine with regular medication?
Curcumin can interact with blood thinners and certain medications via liver enzymes. When using medication, always consult with the treating veterinarian before adding curcumin.

Why is curcumin often combined with piperine, and why doesn’t NGD Care choose that?
Piperine, from black pepper, inhibits a liver enzyme so that curcumin is broken down less quickly and absorption increases. However, piperine also has a vasodilator effect, which is not always desirable, for example in animals with low blood pressure or cardiovascular problems. The liposomal encapsulation increases absorption through another mechanism, without this effect on the blood vessels.
Is golden paste with coconut oil the same as liposomal curcumin?
No. Golden paste combines curcumin with coconut oil and black pepper to improve fat solubility, but that’s a very different process than liposomal encapsulation. In golden paste, curcumin remains dependent on fat digestion in the intestine, which means that its bioavailability remains much lower than in the liposomal form, which transports curcumin directly protected through the intestinal wall.
