Description

Liposomal Lactoferrin: widely applicable immune and intestinal supplement for dogs, cats and humans

Lactoferrin is a multipurpose protein that occurs naturally in breast milk, particularly colostrum, saliva, and tears. It plays a central role in innate immunity: it binds iron with high affinity and thus deprives pathogens of an essential growth factor. It has direct antimicrobial action against a broad spectrum of bacteria, fungi and viruses. Lactoferrin modulates the immune response via toll-like receptors and NFkB signaling, with an anti-inflammatory effect that is relevant both locally in the gut and systemically.

The challenge with oral lactoferrin is protein breakdown in the gastrointestinal tract. NGD Care’s liposomal formulation protects the protein from proteolysis by gastric enzymes and ensures targeted release in the small intestine, where the protein can do its function. This makes the product also suitable for animals with impaired intestinal function, low stomach acid or damaged intestinal mucosa. In those situations, conventional supplementation is less effective.

In veterinary practice, lactoferrin is widely applicable. In the case of intestinal problems, it supports the barrier function of the intestinal mucosa, modulates the local immune response and inhibits the growth of unwanted microorganisms such as Giardia, Candida and SIBO-related bacteria. In chronic intestinal inflammation, including IBD in dogs and cats, lactoferrin can help dampen immune activation in the intestinal wall without suppressing systemic immune function.

Outside the intestine, lactoferrin is relevant for respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, skin infections and as an aid to immunity in young animals, senior animals or animals recovering from illness or medication use.

Lactoferrin aligns well with other NGD Care products such as Biofilm Balance, Fermented Probiotics, Gut Barrier Support and Liposomal Glutathione and as part of an integral gut and immune protocol.
