How does Gut Barrier Support work?

A damaged intestinal wall allows substances that are not supposed to pass through: bacterial toxins, undigested food particles and harmful substances that then enter the bloodstream and activate the immune system. This is the underlying cause of many complaints that at first glance seem to have nothing to do with the intestine: skin problems, allergies, fatigue and a weak immune system.
Fulvic acid repairs the intestinal wall by strengthening the bonds between intestinal cells while also binding heavy metals and toxins so that they are eliminated. It also stimulates Akkermansia muciniphila, the species of bacteria that builds up the protective mucus layer of the intestine. Humic acid strengthens the intestinal barrier directly at the cellular level and inhibits the inflammatory response in case of intestinal leakage.
A 2026 veterinary cell biology study showed this specifically in canine intestinal cells: humic acid protected epithelial barrier integrity and lowered pro-inflammatory cytokines in LPS stress.

When do you see results?

What is the difference between fulvic acid and humic acid?

Both are derived from humus, but work differently. Fulvic acid is a small, fast-absorbing molecule that binds toxins and transports minerals. Humic acid is larger and acts mainly locally on the intestinal wall, where it strengthens the barrier and inhibits inflammation in the event of leakage.

Can I use Gut Barrier Support without knowing if my animal has leaky gut?

Yes. Complaints such as skin problems, allergies, fatigue or weak resistance can indicate increased intestinal permeability, even without obvious abdominal complaints. When in doubt, it is wise to consult with an (integrative) veterinarian first.

Is Gut Barrier Support also suitable after a period of medication or stress?

Yes. Both medication and chronic stress can weaken the intestinal barrier. Fulvic acid and humic acid then support the repair of the tight junctions and help to remove accumulated toxins.

Why is Gut Barrier Support combined with L-Glutamine within the Gut Protocol?
